West of Ireland Girl
An amazing sea kayak paddle around the Minaun Cliffs at Achill Island.
Hello and welcome. I am very excited to get started, my name is Sharon and I began my beauty business Bridge House Beauty Salon in Newport County Mayo in 2001.
I started life initially as a qualified chef working professionally for 7 years. I decided to have a career change and transition to the beauty industry. I worked in different salons and spas in Ireland and the Uk and then on cruise ships for 2 fun hard-working years.
I had returned home in 2000 with the intention of going back to work on the cruise ships again, but life has a way of changing things and I was offered a great job as head therapist in a brand-new spa.
I worked there for one year. And while on a day off I popped to Newport to visit my family with a car full of friends. As usual showing them Newport and the local area I spotted a building for sale which is now Bridge House Beauty Salon. I said to the girls that would make a great salon…… It didn’t take long!
That was August 2001 And I opened the doors to the salon In November 2001.
Looking back, I’m very proud of myself. I just decided to go for it. Applying for a mortgage and putting together a business plan was a new experience. I went for it. And was delighted to get the keys and walk into my own place.
It has not been easy sailing and I have had many learning curves along the way which I will share with you. If anybody wants to have the business advice of the ups and downs of being self-employed and the bumps you learn along the way I will share my story and experience. The good, bad and ugly! 😊
But at the end of the day it has been very rewarding, I wouldn’t change a thing.
It’s hard to believe I’m coming up on 20 years being self-employed. The good news is that I absolutely love my job. I love where I live. I love my clients. And I love Ireland especially the West of Ireland
I have found over the years that there are so many opportunities for people to work on and improve themselves and build up their own confidence and self-esteem and it’s not just by having a facial or waxing or your nails done even though these are great too!
There are so many other ways to give a boost to feel better and build up your confidence to get out there interact and push yourself out of your comfort zone.
This is something I would like to explore and talk about with you and share the benefits and experiences in my life so far.
In my work, it’s so important for my clients to feel comfortable with me. And I am truly honoured and complimented to have even one person walk through the door and even more so when they return. It’s a great sign of their trust in me and their enjoyment while having treatments at the salon.
Because of that I feel it is so important to give them the nicest possible experience. Even if it is just an eyebrow shape to make sure I’m using the best products. To make sure that the salon is clean and tidy and warm. And make sure the decor and the ambience look great! I love to have them feel they are being pampered even if it is only for 15 minutes.

Another aspect of the business I find so important. Is that my products as much as possible are Irish, vegan and cruelty free and high quality.
I use a range of different products. And with each one of those I have gone to the company’s specific training courses to achieve the highest possible standards.
Waxperts are an award-winning Irish waxing brand. Waxing happens to be one of my favourite treatments. And I go to great lengths to ensure that you have the most comfortable and relaxing experience possible. I achieve that by using all Waxperts brands exclusively and have a no double dipping policy in the salon. I would recommend that you Google that if you’re not sure what it is. All I can say is yuck. Lol
Fuschia Makeup are Irish, award-winning vegan and cruelty free. For any makeup look from wedding to graduation to Christmas party nights they have mineral foundations, eyeshadows lipsticks and lashes to suit every taste.
Phytomer is a skin care product from St. Malo in France. They use pioneering marine ingredients such as marine algae’s, plants and microorganisms in a sustainable and responsible approach. I loved this from the first day that I found it. The products are exceptional. The treatments are beautiful. And I have found nothing else that feels as good on the skin.
I will talk a little bit more in future blog posts about all my fantastic products but for now I just wanted to give you an outline. If you have any questions, just comment.
I hope you will join me on this new adventure and join in. Who knows where it will lead us!
